Five Guys… the best burgers of your life

 

So I’m going to preface this post by saying that I changed far more lives with this one while I was in college and Five Guys was still a well-kept secret, but I’m guessing there may be some who are still unexposed…

 

Five Guys is the most incredible burger restaurant EVER.  And I use the term restaurant loosely here.  The first one I ever visited was in Old Town Alexandria, recommended to me by a girl I was living with at the time.  We walked in and it wasn’t what I expected to see at all.  It was a total dive, peanut shells all over the floor, and if it was in North Carolina I would estimate a sanitation score of about 85.  However, this actually soon became part of the appeal as about five minutes later I was decorating the floor with my own shells.  

 

The real magic there, however, was the burgers.  Each regular sized burger was $3.89 (might be $4.89 now) and came with two giant patties, cheese melted all over it, and your choice of any (or all) of the following: ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, onions, sauteed onions, sauteed mushrooms, pickles, lettuce, tomato and bacon.  FOR NO EXTRA CHARGE!!!  Coming from the perspective of a poor college student at the time, I clearly got everything.  You then choose your fries which are boardwalk style, AND you can get them cajun.  I recommend the small because they fill a cup up with fries, put it in your brown paper bag with your tinfoil wrapped burger, and then dump a whole nother scoopful just into the bag.  I also recommend sharing them.  While all of this is great, the best part is that the burger is genuinely the best tasting burger you’ll ever get.  

 

When a new Five Guys opened up in Georgetown (which was closer to me at the time), it was pretty empty at first.  I worried people wouldn’t catch on and my local one would close so I made it my personal mission to introduce Five Guys to everyone I know.  Every Tuesday night for the rest of senior year, along with a couple close friends, we would find a new ‘virgin’ and introduce them.  I’m pretty sure we devirginized over 25 people that year.  Now when I go in I have to wait in line for like 15 minutes.  

 

Writing this makes me wish I’d never given up red meat…
